Sharon Emerson, the CEO of Momentum Commercial Real Estate Services, was selected by CREW Nashville to be a panel member on the topic of gender equality and generational differences of women in commercial real estate.
Sharon believes that despite the progress that women have made in the predominantly male field of commercial real estate, boundaries still exist preventing women to achieve an equal level of success. However, she challenged the audience to not use being a woman as an excuse as to why they are not getting ahead.
"Make it a personal problem not a gender problem and ask for what you deserve." She quoted UNICEF who states that gender equality "means that women and men, and girls and boys, enjoy the same rights, resources, opportunities and protections. It does not require that girls and boys, or women and men, be the same, or that they be treated exactly alike."
"If you feel you are being left out or passed up, go to your employer and be prepared to give specific details as to why you deserve the raise or promotion. If you work for an employer who doesn't see the value in you, then go somewhere that will."
